Cake Collaborations

This year has had a lot of firsts for me in the cake world since this is my first full year out of the wedding cake business.  It’s been different, and I’ve found myself missing it at times, but I’m also really enjoying my new found freedom to work on other things. One of the most exciting things I’ve worked on was my first experience participating in a Cake Collaboration.  I have always wanted to do that, and wow did I learn a lot.  I had NO idea they were so much work, and how much more I would wish I had done on the cake once I turned in the photos. To see my cake sitting there with all those other amazing works of art was such an honor!  You can take a look  here on Sugar Myths And Fantasies Global Edition .  I know you’ll be just as impressed as I was.  The talent is amazing!

Since I’m working so much with my kiddos over on Caking with the Kids, it only made sense to have them help me design the cake.  They are HUGE Rick Riordan fans, and all things mythological, so when the theme was Myths and Fantasies, they knew just what they wanted me to do…Mount Olympus!  No pressure right? WRONG! My son wanted me to make it FLOAT!!  I have never made a gravity defying cake before, BUT, I wanted the challenge….

I couldn’t have pulled it off without the help from my kids and hubby.  I finally figured out how to build the stand using a couple of metal pipes and an elbow piece.  And yes…I forgot to take pictures of the structure before I added all the decorations.  And, did I mention I waited to get started on this piece until I only had 4 days left to turn it in??  Yeeeaaahhh…queen of procrastination over here…   It was a bit crazy!

This was also my first time working with Isomalt.  It is definitely a learning curve, but a lot of fun to work with.  I also learned that you can mix a clear grain alcohol with Karo Syrup/Corn Syrup and get a GREAT shiny glaze that dries beautifully with the perfect shine.  I didn’t have enough isomalt for the cake, so discovering this trick was a lifesaver when I was making the waterfall.  I think my favorite things about this cake are the Cotton Candy CLOUDS!!  I just love clouds…and when they are made out of cotton candy, I love them even more. 🙂

So, would I participate in another Cake Collab? ABSOLUTELY! Would I start WAAAAAY ahead of time next time…one would hope so, but I’m not making any promises. 😉   I do highly recommend participating in one if you ever have the opportunity.   You will learn so much, plus get the chance to really stretch your wings and try some new things you might not otherwise have the opportunity to do.

Have a wonderful day making sweet memories with the ones you love!
